The Conversation Op-ed: China leads the net zero transition – here’s what we can learn from Beijing and Hong Kong

As the dust settles on New York Climate Week, we caught the last trail and published our op-ed on The Conversation. It is a non-profit platform that provides news and analysis written by experts in accessible language for public education and engagement. It covers a wide range of subjects such as Science and Technology, Arts and Culture, Environment and Energy. The platform maintains academic rigor while presenting information in a journalistic style, making it a valuable resource for both academics and the general public. Experts from various academic institutions contribute to the platform, sharing evidence-based insights on current events and issues. The recent Op-ed I co-authored with Dr Matthew Ives covers our research, which pinpointed Sensitive Intervention Points to accelerate energy decarbonization in two prominent Chinese cities, Beijing and Hong Kong.

In the article, we reflected on what we have learned from the journey towards net zero in Beijing and Hong Kong. We leverage positive feedback dynamics within the complex system through learning-by-doing and economies of scale. It was a pleasure collaborating with Matthew Ives and Anna Turns on the piece, and Jonathan Martin who supported the pitching process.

The Imagine Newsletter by The Conversation has inspired me so much throughout my research career, inspiring interdisciplinary and diverse perspectives towards an environmental issue. It’s so easy to read, being written in highly accessible language. Strongly recommend everyone to subscribe!
